In defence of Summer Holiday with Cliff Richards
I was 5 in 1963 so I must have seen Summer Holiday after its initial release. It was one of the first times I was allowed to get on the bus on my own and pay 2d to go to The local flea pit (not official name). It cost 6d to get in to the stalls and 1s to go in the circle where you could throw pop corn on the other kids. This was Saturday morning Pictures of legend. If you stood up at the back of the circle your head was shown in silhouette on the screen and caused howls from the whole audience.
Cliff wasn’t the naff crooner he seems today. He was young, we were young. My older sisters had taken the Beatles and the Stones, I was 7 so I got to idolise Cliff. The gang he goes off in the bus with were hip-ish and young -ish, but it was Cliff’s vehicle (literally). Summer holidays were usually a caravan in Jaywick so going to impossibly exotic places like France and Greece were like a dream for most of us. Yes the plot is thin, the acting awkward and Una Stubbs is a bit out of place. She never convinced me that Cliff would or could or wants to get up to anything with her. But remember it was one of the first mainstream films that attempted to market the hippy dreams of freedom, self expression and the younger generation. It was really the British equivalent of the Monkees but earlier. All I remember is the bright sunshine, carefree feeling and a total contrast to a still grimy post war Britain.
No, it was not a seminal work, no, it was not ground breaking cinema, but the songs were fun and the glimpse of a wider world made quite an impact on my 7 year old self. |

I watched it, finally, last night, and was having fun playing 'spot the famous actor'. But I never got that it was Eric Bana. Excellent use of baldness. Can't wait for the sequel.
Also loved the random space monster sequence that was pretty much a mash-up of The Thing and Starship Troopers. I was DESPERATE for it to suck out Chris Pine's brain.
And if the planet was called Romulus, where's Remus? |

hopeless film, really. We could hardly hear a word of what the mumbling English actors were saying (bar a dozen or so words spoken by Michael Sheen, about "collaboration will not be tolerated"), so missed a lot of the point of the film. At least there were subtitles for when the Germans spoke! Cut out all the "dramatic" silent pauses and the film would be half the length...and what happpened at the end!? Living close to the valley, it was a huge disappointment |
