Disney hoped this wouldn't happen. Tron: Legacy, with all its trickery pokery, Bridgery clonery, has tripped up at the UK Box Office with an opening weekend of £1.97m.

That's £500,000 less than Dawn Treader's debut. And that was considered a concern for Walden Media/Fox, even more so now that it's dropped 50% down to £1.23m. So what went wrong?

That's bound to be the question at Mickey Inc., where conditions were just right for a box office takeover: it was Christmas, they had 3D, they were in last year's Avatar slot, they cut costs on the script. What happened?

The snow will obviously be blamed - it can stop light bikes as sure as it stops Heathrow airport, the education system and your mum's Fiat Punto. Avatar had the same problem when it opened (many multiplexes actually shut up shop for a night in December 2009), but even then James Cameron clawed together £8.5m from a weekend of snow-strewn frozen chaos.

Take away the 3D uplift and you're left with an amount that The Tourist's opening (£1.34m) tried to rival last week. The Best Comedy/Musical of the Year isn't laughing now, as it also split profits in two to take £700k in its second week. Depp and Jolie are strutting all over Burlesque, though, which debuted with £425k, leaving Cher stuck in 6th place and The Tourist up in 4th spot.

The surprise, for me, is Harry Potter's steady decline. The boy wizard is still in 3rd place but also played halves with takings dropping to £875k. The boy wizard's total is a solid £44.4m, but for a franchise depending on fans' repeat viewings, it's that kind of 5th week figure that highlights how quiet the blizzard battered weekend was. And how many screens Disney gobbled up for Tron: Legacy. It also shows the impact that 3D can make on the box office.

Even taking those factors into account, there's little disguising that Tron flopped.

After the success of Twentieth Century Fox's Avatar Day, Disney held Tron Night yesterday - a chance for fans to see 23 minutes of preview footage from the upcoming Tron: Legacy. The verdict? Pretty damn awesome.

Continuing on from Steve Lisberger's incredibly impressive 1982 movie, Tron: Legacy takes place in an age where technology is far more relevant. It's so advanced that the film's in 3D, an arguably unnecessary touch, but one that at least makes the title screen stand out a little more. The rest is just as stunning however you see it (hint: IMAX).

John Woo is currently focussing on Flying Tigers, his 1940 aerial epic about fighter pilot Claire Le Chennault, who taught the Chinese to fly before they took on the Japanese in WWII. But while he targets Liam Neeson for the lead role in his $90m IMAX blockbuster, the director is also looking at doing something even more dramatic: remaking his own movie The Killer, and Le Samourai.

Talking to Variety, Woo detailed his plans to rework his 1989 action movie The Killer, which sees Chow Yun-Fat as an assassin who accidentally damages a female singer's eyes. Having a sudden pang of conscience, he decides to take one last job to help fund the expensive operation to save her eyesight. As the couple begin to fall in love, a police detective starts chasing down the assassin - and the two soon become friends.

Cementing Woo's status outside of his own country, The Killer not only helped the helmer make the jump to Hollywood (and, eventually, Face/Off) but influenced later action directors like Tarantino and Johnnie To. It also featured fun nicknames like "Mickey Mouse" and "Dumbo" for those of the subtitled persuasion. With its over-the-top action, use of white pigeons and wonderfully bloody violence, The Killer is pretty much perfect the way it is. Remaking it is kind of pointless.

But even worse than that is to plan a remake of Le Samourai. Jean-Pierre Melville's 1967 classic (nay, masterpiece) is a work that should never be touched by anyone, Face/Off or otherwise. The tale of solitary hitman Jef Costello has such style and beauty that to even think of remaking it is a crime against cinema. A blend of samurai, gangster and noir traditions, Melville's philosophical thriller is one of the most influential movies in the genre. The Killer was actually Woo's tribute to it in many ways. Although Le Samourai has something Woo's movie never did: Alain Delon wearing the sexiest hat in the world.

Woo also spoke to Variety about his desire to make a musical (he almost directed Phantom of the Opera), his thoughts about a Kurosawa homage, and his aim to not retire anytime soon. Given the mojo he got back from making Red Cliff, that's no bad thing.

It honestly is great that a legend such as The Woo is still making new movies. But if he goes near Le Samourai, I'll blast the guy through a wall with his own shotgun. In slow-motion. And then throw a pigeon at him. 

With Avatar Special Edition edging ever closer, we've now got ourselves a second trailer to get our juices flowing. Including the original trailers, this is probably close to our 20th video preview of Pandora, but here's some news to really get you turned on: the Na'avi sex scene will be included.

Not in the trailer, you understand, but in the extended footage reintroduced into the movie - Avatar's re-release promises fans an extra eight minutes of "never-before-seen" material. A very tiny fragment of those minutes will see Jake and Neytiri getting their blue freak on.

"It's been restored, every last frame of it," Cameron told MTV recently. "Seriously. I would say, just so that we correctly manage people's expectations, it does not change our rating at all. I would call it more of an alien foreplay scene. It's not like they're ripping their clothes off and going at it."

Cameron originally commented: "Audiences repeatedly told me they wanted more of Pandora, and wished they could have stayed there longer. So we’re making that possible."

Avatar Special Edition is clawing its way back towards our cinema, scheduled to arrive in a few weeks time. So it's only natural that it has a trailer to precede its digital 3-D re-release on Friday 27th August.

Yes, Cameron's blockbusting, groundbreaking, blue-loving sci-fi epic is back to round off its box office record to an even neater number. Like infinity. Or something. As he put it: "Audiences repeatedly told me they wanted more of Pandora, and wished they could have stayed there longer. So we’re making that possible."

In addition to another chance to sample Pandora all over again, there's also that added lure of eight minutes of never-before-seen footage. So read on for the chance to see the trailer for Avatar all over again - and if you spot eight seconds of brand new footage, give yourself a big blue pat on the back.

Have you heard of Inception? You probably have. Well, now you can read it as well as watch it, with a prequel comic that's turned up over on Yahoo! Movies. The Cobol Job takes place before Inception's main plot, with the events leading neatly up to the beginning of the film - it's not exactly spoiler-free in some regards, but it won't ruin the movie before you've seen it.

Written by Jordan Goldberg, it's features  some lovely artwork from Long Vo, Joe Ng, and Crystal Reid, nicely capturing the likeness of Leonardo DiCaprio and Joseph Gordon Levitt. Under 20 pages long, it takes you throw one of Cobb's standard dream heists, inspired by Christopher Nolan's film. And you know what? It's rather good. And the online reader for it ain't half bad either - much like the viewing style of the iPhone's Comics app.

You can read it online over at Yahoo! Movies, or download it as a PDF. Well worth a look. Even if you do wait until after you've seen the film. Oh, Inception comes out on Friday by the way. And it's pretty much the film of the year.

Guess who back. Back again. Cameron's back. And this time he's brought with him 8 minutes (count 'em, 8) of never-seen-before footage. Yes, Avatar (or "Avatar: Special Edition") now has an official re-release date: Friday 27th August.

How do you top a box office record? Release the film again and keep on counting. That's pretty much the principle behind James Cameron's extended version of his blockbusting, groundbreaking, blue-loving sci-fi epic. Naturally, it'll only be in 3-D. Because, largely thanks to Avatar, the number of digital 3-D screens in the UK has exploded. Cameron had this to say:

"Audiences repeatedly told me they wanted more of Pandora, and wished they could have stayed there longer. So we’re making that possible. Avatar: Special Edition will be exclusively in 3-D, and will have eight minutes of never before seen footage, including new creatures and action scenes. Whether you already love the movie, or you've never seen it, with this Special Edition, you'll be seeing it like never before."

Unless of course you saw it the first time. Still, eight minutes could be crucial to the plot - perhaps an alternate ending, or that long-mooted sex scene? Either way, Fox are all fired up for the second cinema event of the decade: "It's especially gratifying, because not only has Avatar become one of the most beloved films in history, but after its initial theatrical release, we have been inundated with requests to re-release the film in theaters in 3-D. Equally important, we’re thrilled that Jim Cameron is able to give audiences even more of what they loved."

Stop. Wait. Hold the press. Christopher Nolan has answered another Batman question while doing the rounds for Inception. Jonathan Nolan has been beavering away at it for a while now, using Christopher and David Goyer's ideas for a story, but (via HeyUGuys) MTV asked him for more details. Here's what he said:

"We know we're aiming for 2012 [as a release date], but we're just working on the script ... I'm focused on Inception now, but I'll surface in a couple of weeks and work out how to approach it."

Yes, that's right - a whole two sentences on the long-awaited Batman 3. Breaking news right there, filled with brand new information. But let's be honest: really, the only reason to even mention this is so I can put up the link to the Inception trailer again. It's over here. And it really is looking like the best movie of the year. If not the greatest thing Nolan's done so far.

Inception is released on Friday 16th July.

Yes, this is the latest IMAX-ified poster for Christopher Nolan's mind-bending thriller thing, which appeared over at Yahoo! Movies. You can tell how crazy it's going to be by the number of people standing on the ceiling - that is, all of them. They're also all carrying briefcases or guns. Or briefcases with guns. Or briefcases with guns in them. Or -- you get the idea.

More interestingly, we also get what might be our first glimpse of Marion Cotillard in full-on Inception mode, showcasing balance skillz that rival those of Leo, Ken Watanabe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Ellen Page (she's running upside down!).

Inception will twist your brain into tiny pieces in July. Excited? I couldn't possible comment. Mainly because I'm too busy sticking this poster to the outside of my house.

For reshoots, that is. Yes, Louis Leterrier's Clash of the Titans, having wrapped shooting, is now set to start filming all over again next January. That wouldn't normally be a problem, but then it is being released in March.

Chatting to the LA Times at an Avatar event, star Sam Worthington revealed that they would be rebooting production after Warner Bros "cut loose with some money". More Clash for our Titans, then, it seems. Especially given that they're looking at an IMAX release and may even turn it into a 3-D affair (can you spell Kraken?)

It all sounds a bit pressured ("we'll be right up against it", Sam admits) but perhaps it's a necessary thing: after all, Worthington also concedes that there were some "creaky parts that we knew were creaky and that we knew were going to be creaky going into it." So once they're fixed, it will all be gung-ho crash-bang ker-ching, right?

Sam adds: "The studio is also letting us add some gods and scenes." Oh, well that's ok then. I'm completely reassured. Clash of the Titans: now with added Gods.
