If Werner Herzog hasn't been there, it ain't a cave.

It's hard not to think that after gazing in wonder at Cave of Forgotten Dreams, Werner's 3D tour of South France's Chauvet caves. It's a completely unique experience. Even more unique than Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans (and yes, lizards feature in both).

But as amazing as Germans, 32,000 year old porn and "scientists" playing the flute are, there are other places you can go to get your cavern-based kicks.

Speaking of which, here are some of cinema's best caves...

From the director of Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl (hurrah!) and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (erm, perhaps not), Rango is an animated oddity. The trailers were cryptic to say the least - hello, clockwork fish - but Gore Verbinski's latest effort is an excellent existential Western. Sadly, there aren't more wind-up fish.

Remember Rango? The chameleon with the identity crisis? That freaky video with the clockwork fish? Well, now we have more trippy stuff to enjoy. Like a full-length trailer.

Johnny Depp voices the befuddled lizard. whose life is constantly under threat. Animated by ILM and written by Gladiator's John Logan, Gore Verbinski's mind-bending cartoon also features vocals from Ray Winstone, Abigail Breslin, Timothy Olyphant and Bill Nighy.

With Depp pulling his most confused and terrified face, Rango's journey of self-discovery, winding across deserts, past cacti and through one giant vat of psychotropic substances, looks to be something to remember. Or, more accurately, forget in the happy haze of a drug-addled stupour.

Remember that. Right? Right." This is the kind of dialogue that knows it's dialogue. The kind that walks a line between cool and crass. The kind of dialogue that needs to be spoken by top-class actors in order to work. Fortunately, they don't come much classier than Ian McShane, who delivers that line with killer timing. The rest? Well, it's all fucking swearing, isn't it.

What would you do if you witnessed your own daughter get killed? Well, if you were Liam Neeson, you'd hunt down every European on the planet. But if you're Mel Gibson, well, you go about things a little more thoroughly. First of all, you'd get Martin Campbell in to direct. And then you'd unleash some cracking new artwork to go with the exciting trailer.

Yes, it's only a few weeks until Edge of Darkness is released and we've got our hands on the latest artwork for the thriller. A remake of the classic TV series of the same name, Edge of Darkness sees old Mel back on the big screen, uncovering the conspiracy behind his daughter's death. A landmark show when first broadcast in the UK, this retread is looking pretty promising stuff. Think State of Play. But with more guns.

We all like a bit of mince pies and mulled wine over the Christmas period. And maybe a few presents too. I do. Except for the fact that nobody buys me anything. And I hate mince pies.
