Martha Marcy May Marlene

Terrifying and beautiful, this might well be the best film of 2012.

Review: Acts of Godfrey

84 minutes of rhyming couplets? It sounds well annoying but I actually loved it.

Review: The Descendants

Nice film, shame about the voiceover.

Tinker Tailor Whack-a-Mole

There's a mole at the top of The Circus. Can you bash its face in?

Review: Like Crazy

A superb anti-rom-com that breaks some cliches and obeys others, which only makes it more moving.

Review: Shame

A devastating, magnificent film that trades almost solely in sex – and yet looks right through it.

Review: Coriolanus

Like Olivier and Branagh before him, Fiennes makes Shakespeare as gripping as it ever was. Verily, Voldemort did good.

If Newsreaders Did Shakespeare...

Inspired by Jon Snow's role in Coriolanus, here are some other Shakespeare adaptations starring newsreaders.

Review: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

After Benjamin Button and The Social Network, this feels like Fincher back in Se7en territory. Grizzled, haunting and beautiful.

Woody at the BFI

As the BFI's season of Woody Allen films continues, we look back at some of the director's best (and worst) films.

The Artist

A feel-good treat, pure and simple. You’ll swoon, you’ll sigh, you’ll want to tap dance.

Chronicle trailer

If you've seen the trailer for Chronicle, you've either groaned at the thought of yet another found-footage movie or been bored by the idea of yet another superhero with a gritty, modern origins story. But Josh Trank's sci-fi takes that tired genre and the tried-and-tested format and comes up with a brilliant play on both.

Did Spider-Man spend his formative months pranking people at the supermarket? Did ickle Magneto shuffle around parked cars for a laugh? Andrew (DeHaan) does. He also gets beaten up by his alcoholic father (Kelly) on a nightly basis. And carries a video camera around with him all day.

This new Chronicle clip contains the best trip to the shops I've seen since Dale Winton's cancelled ITV game show.

Plus it explains why this weird stuff keeps happening to me in Sainsbury's.

Chronicle is out in UK cinemas on Wednesday 1st February. Head this way to watch the full Chronicle trailer.

Batman. Spider-Man. Wolverine. For years, fans have been waiting for a character to laugh at. But now we can laugh at something other than Tobey Maguire: Seth Rogen’s stepped into a superhero costume. And he’s not afraid to be funny. In fact, he’s good at it. And he kicks ass too. He does both. Very well.

"It's not easy to do what you did... You made my men look like a bunch of minimum wage mal cops."

It's a lot like the Comic-Con footage shown before (no surprise given it's a mere fraction of the length) but at the end of the day, it's got a blonde dude (Chris Hemsworth), Natalie Portman, and a massive hammer. What more could you want? Anthony Hopkins in a golden eyepatch, perhaps? You've got that as well. The world-melding plot of Kenneth Branagh's 3D take on the comic book figure of legend may not set your manly eyebrows on fire, but it's got a potential to at least be different to Iron Man 3.

Can Kenneth Branagh pull this off after the glut of superhero movies we've had to put up with? It's not looking completely impossible judging by this new Thor trailer. It's out on Friday 29th April. Read on for the full video.

Ever since Slither, fans of James Gunn have been looking forward to Super with hope in their eyes. And now their retinas have something to show for it: the first Super clip, thanks to the Scream Awards.

The twisted superhero spoof sees everyday man Frank (Rainn Wilson) transforms into The Crimson Bolt after his wife Sarah (Liv Tyler) gets off with Jacques (Kevin Bacon), a drug dealer. Of course, Frank's got no super powers. He does, however, have a wrench.

Including Ellen Page as a cute psychopath sidekick, Super is still suffering from following the similarly-themed Kick-Ass, but could still pack a punch of its own to your funny bone.

It got bought up at the Toronto International Film Festival, so it's definitely on the way to being distributed somewhere. At some point. Until then, keep counting down the days until we see Nathan Fillion on the big screen again.

Remember that Megamind trailer that turned up on Apple last week? Well now we have it here, along with a bunch of shiny new character stills.

Dreamworks' superhero animation sees evil alien orphan Megamind (Will Ferrell) constantly at war with the well-off butch flying orphan known as Metro Man (Brad Pitt). But when Megamind finally triumphs over his arch nemesis, the cape is on the other foot. Along with the rest of the tightly-fitting spandex clothing.

Enter Tighten (Jonah Hill), a new rival made by Megamind when his blue-headed life gets a little too lonely. Naturally, the two battle over the fate of Metro City, while a journalist played by Tina Fey runs around avoiding the carnage and destruction.

Full of CGI haircuts, shiny outfits, and - erm - giant robots with fish bowls for heads (that's David Cross, by the way), Megamind hits cinemas on Friday 3rd December. You can check out the new trailer over here, or read on for the full range of banners.

You're most likely aware of who/what Megamind is, but in case you're not up to speed on Dreamworks' new animation, this new trailer will help.

An alien orphan sent to Earth when his planet is destroyed, Metro Man (Brad Pitt) is a happy, healthy flying person. Raised by a rich family, he soon grows up to become the superhero protector of Metro City.

Megamind (Will Ferrell), on the other hand, crash lands in a prison. Raised by inmates and sporting a massive blue forehead, he soon turns to the evil life of all-powerful supervillain. But then, when he finally incapacitates Metro Man and destroys his powers, Megamind finds victory to be, well, kind of lonely.

Enter reporter Roxanne (Tina Fey), who tags along when the city falls under attack from new villain Titan (Jonah Hill), leaving Megamind to try and save the day.

Sporting tight-fitting spandex and a sidekick voiced by David Cross (he actually speaks in this trailer), Megamind is shaping up to be an amusing animated outing - the invisible car gag alone is pretty decent.

Megamind takes over cinemas on Friday 3rd December. The trailer's online over at Apple - we should have it for you soon.

Ever thought Peter Parker was a dumb name? Perhaps you hate Bruce Wayne's poncy moniker? Or maybe you just want to be Dave Lizewski? Well, now you can do better: you can be the alter ego for Mark Millar's next superhero, Superior.

In something of a tradition for the Kick-Ass scribe, Millar is auctioning off the name to his next comic book character, giving everyone a chance to live on in the pages of graphic novel history. And very possibly on screen as well.

Superior, launching in October, is the story of a young boy who has multiple sclerosis. Then, one day, thanks to a magical wish, he becomes the superhero of his dreams. It's written by Millar, and drawn by Leinil Yu - the only thing missing is that character's name.

"We had great success with the Kick-Ass and Nemesis auctions, and hopefully we can raise a similar sum again with this opportunity," says Millar on the auction's page. "Dave Lizewski is now an action figure and movie icon as well as a comic-book character and both Matt Anderson and Blake Morrow are delighted to find themselves as the leads in the upcoming Tony Scott adaptation of Nemesis."

All proceeds from the auction will go towards a special needs unit in a school where Millar's brother, Dr Bobby Millar, has been raising cash for handicapped children for several years.

Head over to ebay make your bid. You've got until 16:24 on Thursday 9th September.

With only weeks to go before shooting starts, Matthew Vaughn is still cramming his cast list full of top talents. The latest to join X-Men's First Class club? Rose Byrne and Jason Flemyng. And Oliver Platt.

Byrne is hammering out the fine print before she signs on to play Moira McTaggert, a genetics specialist. A Scottish scientist? Yes, that's right, she'll be the one doing the naughty with James McAvoy's Professor X while he founds his school for gifted youngsters (hopefully forming a highly intelligent love triangle with Michael Fassbender's Magneto). After her turns in Knowing and Sunshine, she's got a good track in science and weird crap. Plus she can act, which helps.

Flemyng is down to play Azazel - Nightcrawler's pappy. Confirming his role at Empire's Movie-Con, the actor (who has appeared in each of Matthew Vaughn's films) is getting ready for some serious make-up work: "They said, 'Don’t worry, we’ll add the tail in post'".

A teleporting mutant from another dimension, Azazel spends his time trying to get freaky with human women so his bright red, long-tailed, pointy-eared genes can thrive and give him a long-term link to this world. One successful attempt later and out pops bright blue offspring Nightcrawler, complete with ears and tail. And, if you're wondering how he teleports, Empire describe Flemyng's technique as something like "a cross between a flamenco dancer and a Bollywood star". Sexy.

And, just when you thought this was enough talent to fill Professor X's school register, Oliver Platt has been announced as another actor who's hopped onboard the mutant wagon. No, he's not a mutant: he's playing The Man in Black. Now, Platt doesn't look a lot like Johnny Cash, so he's probably just your average shady government type, chasing down X-Men (or at least looking at them in a suspicious manner).

Vaughn's superhero prequel now boasts the combined skills of McAvoy, Fassbender, Kevin Bacon, Nicholas Hoult, Alice Eve and Jennifer Lawrence. And Byrne, Flemyng and Platt, of course. X-Men: First Class starts shooting at the end of this month, and will tell the world how Magneto and Professor X began their lifelong feud. Probably over a lost Johnny Cash album.
